accessibility & help

Those who seek sanctuary in the UK should not be left destitute. Asylum seekers and refugees should not be left penniless on our streets.

Many refugees and asylum seekers experience serious problems with the UK asylum system, whatever their status.

What's wrong?

Every year, the British Red Cross helps 10,000 people who are in need of help, after fleeing conflict and oppression. Of these, around 6,000 are destitute – living a hand-to-mouth existence.

We think this is wrong in our society.

What are we calling for?

  • We want to see a fair, effective, and efficient asylum system that treats people with respect and dignity.
  • We want that system to uphold the UK's responsibilities to provide safety for refugees.
  • We believe that no asylum seeker in the UK should be without a home and financial support.
  • We think that a better system would include the early and sustained delivery of quality legal advice.

Family reunion: a difficult fight to see your family

Family reunion is part of UK and international law. But some families cannot afford the legal help to make it happen – and it’s keeping loved ones apart.

Ending destitution

We are calling for changes to the asylum system to prevent people being left in desperate conditions without homes or jobs.
